Chances Don’t Grow on Trees

When I was a little girl, my favorite bed-time stories were the ones of Petre Ispirescu. Stories of damsels in distress rescued by handsome fearless warriors who pass 100 tests to prove their love. Fighting the mighty dragon, bringing a secret key from a garden which had a terrifying beast as a warden, climbing the highest mountain. It was all subsumed to the same underlying principle – love needs to prove itself.

In the world that we live today, there are no more dragons nor scary garden-keepers, but there are nonetheless different kinds of tests that we must all pass every day. After dating several Mr.Wrong, Mr.Very-Wrong and Mr.What-Was-I-Thinking, I have reached a point in my life where I feel the damsels in distress of my childhood didn’t know s**t about how it’s done. You don’t send the guy to fetch the key from the secret garden, you simply remember when he told you he will call and, if he doesn’t, just tell him „Goodbye”. Damsels of our times are much more subtle when it comes to putting guys to the test.

Okay, I admit…I may be just a tiny bit overdoing it, but it’s true what they say. Those from your present are destined to pay for the sins of those from your past. If Mr.Wrong has done a bad deed in your past, Mr.Not-too-Bad from your present will have twice as much work convincing you he shouldn’t become Mr.Yesterday. I know, it’s a tough world.

„Gonna do my very best, baby can’t you see/Gotta put me to the test, take a chance on me”….that’s what Abba used to sing. Oh well, baby…if you’re gonna do your very best, that’d better be your VERY best, cause there’s no second chance coming your way any time soon.

Yes, I’m that bad. Hey…who said damsels are supposed to be easy to handle? And yes…love should prove itself. I’ve had plenty of empty words and void promises, so I’m not accepting anything less than love. True love. Do you think you can handle that or would you prefer to fetch the key?
